How To Unlock Animal Rescue

Wildlife rescue becomes available after completing:

Order 15: Deliver the Test Subject Kangaroo to the Animal Shelter

This mission introduces Sam to the Animal Shelter and teaches the basics of transporting living creatures.

Once the shelter joins the Chiral Network, animals begin appearing throughout Australia.

Every Animal You Can Capture

Players can rescue several species found across Australia.

Current known wildlife includes:

  • Bilby
  • Echidna
  • Emu
  • Kangaroo
  • Koala
  • Lyrebird
  • Platypus
  • Quokka
  • Tasmanian Devil
  • Wombat

Each rescued animal can be transported to the Animal Shelter and added to the sanctuary.

How To Find Animals

Wildlife roams naturally throughout Australia and does not appear as traditional cargo.

To locate animals:

  1. Press L1 to activate the scanner.
  2. Look for blue highlighted silhouettes.
  3. Search open terrain, forests, and rocky areas.
  4. Check both the ground and nearby trees.

Different species favor different environments.

For example:

  • Kangaroos are commonly found hopping across open areas.
  • Koalas are often spotted in trees.
  • Smaller creatures tend to stay near vegetation and rocky terrain.

Because animals do not have fixed spawn locations, exploration is key.

How To Capture Animals

Once you locate an animal, approach it carefully.

When close enough:

  1. Move within range.
  2. Press Square.
  3. Sam places the animal into an Animal Carrier.

The animal immediately becomes cargo that can be transported to the Animal Shelter.

Easier Ways To Catch Wildlife

Animals are naturally cautious around humans and may flee when approached.

There are two reliable capture methods.

Sneak Up On Them

Move slowly and quietly toward the animal.

Once close enough, quickly press Square before it escapes.

Use Non-Lethal Weapons

Players can temporarily stun animals with:

  • Rubber bullet weapons
  • Non-lethal firearms
  • Other incapacitating equipment

A stunned animal is much easier to capture safely.

Transporting Captured Animals

Animals are extremely fragile compared to normal cargo.

They can be transported:

  • On Sam's back
  • In vehicles

However, animals cannot be transported using:

  • DHV Magellan fast travel

This means you'll need to physically deliver them to the Animal Shelter.

Avoid rough terrain, combat encounters, and vehicle crashes while transporting wildlife.

Animal Shelter Rewards

Every rescued animal delivered to the Animal Shelter grants:

  • Likes
  • Connection progress
  • New sanctuary residents

Animals released into the reserve can later be observed roaming safely throughout the shelter grounds.

Players can also learn more about each species through information available in the SSS database.

Creature Comforter Trophy

Delivering your first rescued animal to the Animal Shelter unlocks:

Creature Comforter

Bronze Trophy

This is one of the earliest optional trophies available after reaching Australia.

Can You Pet Animals?

Unfortunately, no.

While rescued animals freely roam the sanctuary, players cannot pet, feed, or directly interact with them beyond observing them.

You can, however:

  • Approach them
  • Give Likes
  • Learn about them through SSS entries
  • Watch their behavior around the sanctuary

Many animals remain cautious around Sam and may run away if approached too closely.

Can Animals Be Killed?

Yes, but it's strongly discouraged.

Animals can be harmed by:

  • Weapons
  • Explosives
  • Vehicle collisions

Killing wildlife does not create BTs or voidouts, but it does result in a significant penalty.

Players lose more than 100 Likes for killing an animal.

Aside from the penalty, rescuing animals is generally far more rewarding and contributes to the Animal Shelter's growth.

Why Rescue Animals?

Animal rescue serves as a relaxing side activity that complements Death Stranding 2's exploration systems.

Benefits include:

  • Extra Likes
  • Trophy progress
  • Sanctuary population growth
  • Wildlife lore entries
  • Additional exploration goals

For players who enjoy discovering everything Australia has to offer, animal rescue is one of the most rewarding optional activities in the game.

Death Stranding 2 Material Farming Guide: Best Ways to Get Metals, Ceramics, Resins, Chemicals, and Special Alloys

The fastest way to farm materials in Death Stranding 2 is by restoring and upgrading Mines across Australia. Mines generate large amounts of resources in exchange for Chiral Crystals and can be upgraded for even greater yields.

For early and mid-game farming, clearing Brigand Camps, claiming materials from facility terminals, and collecting abandoned resource containers from other players are the most reliable methods. Special Alloys are generally easiest to obtain through mines, while Metals and Ceramics are commonly found at enemy camps and distribution centers.
