The mounted deer heads in Alan Wake 2 are a hidden collectible tied to Saga Anderson. You can interact with each one to pet it, which adds it to your total count.

There are 12 deer heads across Cauldron Lake, Bright Falls, and Watery. Finding all of them unlocks a secret reward room inside the Elderwood Palace Lodge.

This is not required for basic story progression, but it is absolutely worth doing if you want extra supplies before tougher late-game encounters.


How Deer Head Tracking Works

After petting a deer head, you can check your progress inside Saga’s Mind Place.

Interact with the mounted deer head there and Saga will comment on how many remain. This is the easiest way to track your progress without guessing which ones you already found.

Once all 12 deer heads are complete, the Mind Place deer gives a clue pointing you back to its “twin” in the real world. That twin is the deer head in the Elderwood Palace Lodge field office.


Cauldron Lake Deer Head Locations

Mobile Home

The first deer head is inside the mobile home just south of Nightingale’s murder site.

Look inside the northern room of the home. This area is available early during Return 1: Invitation.


Witchfinder’s Station

This deer head is inside the cabin at Witchfinder’s Station in the northwestern corner of Cauldron Lake.

You can reach this area after completing the Overlap section in Return 2: The Heart, when the flooded paths open up.


Rental Cabins

The final Cauldron Lake deer head is inside the Rental Cabins area.

You need the Bolt Cutters from Return 5: Old Gods to access this section. Enter the cabins area, solve the nearby Nursery Rhyme puzzle, then enter the unlocked cabin to find the deer head.

Elderwood Palace Lodge

This deer head is inside Saga and Casey’s temporary field office room in the Elderwood Palace Lodge.

It is one of the earliest Bright Falls deer heads you can interact with.

This deer head is in the narrow storage closet inside Oh Deer Diner.

Head through the back hallway and check the first door on the right.


Valhalla Nursing Home

This deer head is inside the main manor building at Valhalla Nursing Home.

Go upstairs to the second-floor lounge room near the Break Room and look in the corner.


Wellness Center Workshop

This deer head is inside the Wellness Center Workshop northeast of Valhalla Nursing Home.
