Godfrey First Elden Lord Boss Guide

Godfrey First Elden Lord is one of the final major boss fights in Elden Ring and a brutal test of dodge timing, positioning, and patience. The fight consists of two distinct phases, beginning with the axe-wielding Godfrey First Elden Lord before transitioning into the far more aggressive Hoarah Loux Warrior.

The key to defeating Godfrey is learning when to dodge into his attacks instead of retreating away from them.

Before fighting Godfrey, it is recommended that you:

  • Reach level 100+
  • Use strong physical weapons
  • Bring Frostbite or Lightning damage
  • Equip strong defensive talismans
  • Summon durable Spirit Ashes

Good Spirit Ash choices include:

  • Mimic Tear
  • Black Knife Tiche

Talismans that improve jump attacks or physical defense are especially useful during this fight.

Phase 1 Godfrey First Elden Lord

During Phase 1, Godfrey fights using his massive axe and repeated stomp attacks that create large shockwaves across the arena.

Many of his attacks have deceptively long reach, so rolling backward is usually dangerous.

Instead:

  • Roll toward his left leg
  • Stay close after dodging
  • Punish recovery animations carefully

How To Dodge His Axe Combos

Godfrey frequently chains together:

  • Overhead slams
  • Multi-hit axe swings
  • Delayed combo finishers

Many combos continue longer than expected, so avoid attacking too early.

The safest punish windows happen after:

  • Large overhead slams
  • Full combo finishers
  • Long recovery swings

Landing one or two quick attacks is usually safer than overcommitting.

Jump Over Stomp Shockwaves

One of Godfrey’s signature mechanics is his ground stomp attacks.

Instead of rolling:

  • Jump over the shockwaves
  • Land near him immediately afterward
  • Counter with jumping heavy attacks

This is one of the safest and most reliable punish opportunities in the entire fight.

Fast Weapons Vs Heavy Weapons

Fast weapons work well because they allow quick punish hits between combos.

However, jump-heavy attacks from larger weapons are extremely effective at breaking Godfrey’s poise and opening critical attack opportunities.

Phase 2 Hoarah Loux Warrior

At around half health, Godfrey abandons his axe and transforms into Hoarah Loux Warrior.

This phase is significantly more aggressive and focuses heavily on grabs, wrestling attacks, and massive area damage.

At the start of Phase 2, Hoarah Loux lets out a loud yell that does not deal damage, giving you a brief moment to reposition, heal, or buff safely.

Dodge The Grab Attacks

One of Hoarah Loux’s deadliest attacks is his lunging grab.

When he rushes forward attempting the grab:

  • Dodge toward him at the last second
  • Avoid rolling backward too early
  • Punish after the recovery animation

His grab attacks leave him vulnerable for several moments if they miss.

Watch The Earthquake Combos

Several attacks involve Hoarah Loux repeatedly slamming the ground and creating chained shockwaves.

The safest strategy is:

  • Keep slight distance
  • Wait for the combo to fully finish
  • Punish only after the final slam

Trying to attack too early during these sequences often leads to getting caught in follow-up explosions or grabs.

Ranged Builds And Spellcasting

Magic and Faith builds can still perform well during this fight, but timing is extremely important.

Recommended faster spells include:

  • Lightning Spear
  • Rock Sling

Slow casting animations are risky because Godfrey and Hoarah Loux close distance very quickly.

Ranged attacks work best after his larger recovery animations or failed grab attempts.

Stay Calm During Phase 2

The second phase feels chaotic because of how aggressive Hoarah Loux becomes, but many attacks actually have large recovery windows once you recognize the timing.

Avoid panic rolling and focus on reacting to individual attacks instead of trying to predict entire combo chains too early.

Step-by-Step

  1. Equip Frostbite or Lightning damage if available.
  2. Summon Mimic Tear or Black Knife Tiche.
  3. Roll toward Godfrey’s left side during axe attacks.
  4. Jump over stomp shockwaves instead of rolling.
  5. Punish overhead slams and combo finishers.
  6. Avoid overcommitting during long combo chains.
  7. Prepare for the Hoarah Loux Warrior transition at half health.
  8. Dodge toward his grab attacks at the last second.
  9. Punish failed grabs and earthquake recovery windows.
  10. Stay patient during Phase 2 aggression.

What You Need

  • Level 100+
  • Strong physical weapon
  • Frostbite or Lightning damage
  • Durable Spirit Ashes
  • Fast dodge mobility
  • Defensive talismans

Best Strategy

The safest strategy is to stay aggressive enough to remain near Godfrey while dodging into attacks instead of away from them.

Jump over stomp shockwaves during Phase 1, then focus on baiting and punishing grab attacks during the Hoarah Loux Warrior phase.

Rewards

  • Progression toward the final bosses of Elden Ring
  • Access to the final endgame sequence

Tips

If you keep getting hit by stomp attacks, stop trying to roll them.

Jumping the shockwaves consistently makes this fight dramatically easier and creates some of the safest damage openings in the battle.
