Quick Answer

To respec your character in Elden Ring, you must defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon inside the Academy of Raya Lucaria. After defeating her, she becomes an NPC that allows you to reset your stats using a Larval Tear.

Respeccing resets all of your attributes back to your starting class values so you can freely redistribute your levels into a completely new build.

How Respeccing Works In Elden Ring

Elden Ring allows you to completely reset your character stats through a system called Rebirth.

This lets you:

  • Change builds
  • Experiment with weapons
  • Switch from melee to magic
  • Reallocate wasted levels
  • Optimize late-game setups

The system becomes available after defeating Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon.

Thankfully, she is much nicer after the boss fight than during it.

Where To Unlock Respeccing

You unlock respecs inside the Academy of Raya Lucaria located in Liurnia of the Lakes.

The academy sits in the center of the flooded region and acts as the main legacy dungeon after Stormveil Castle.

At the end of the academy, defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon.

After the fight:

  • Rennala remains alive
  • She stays inside the Raya Lucaria Grand Library
  • She becomes a permanent NPC

This unlocks the Rebirth option whenever you speak to her.

How To Respec Your Stats

To reset your attributes:

  1. Defeat Rennala
  2. Return to the Grand Library
  3. Speak with her
  4. Select Rebirth
  5. Spend one Larval Tear

Once activated, all of your levels reset back to the base stats of your starting class.

You can then redistribute every earned level however you want.

This allows you to completely transform your character without restarting the game.

Larval Tears Explained

Every respec requires one Larval Tear.

These are relatively rare items found throughout The Lands Between.

You can obtain them from:

  • Hidden enemies
  • Merchant shops
  • Underground regions
  • Special transformations
  • Late-game exploration areas

Because Larval Tears are limited each playthrough, it is smart to plan your build before repeatedly respeccing every time a cool weapon drops.

Which is admittedly very difficult in a game where every weapon looks like it belongs on a heavy metal album cover.

What Changes During A Respec

A respec only affects your allocated attribute points.

Things that do NOT reset include:

  • Your level
  • Weapons
  • Equipment
  • Spells
  • Inventory
  • Quest progress

Your stats simply return to your starting class baseline before you redistribute points manually.

Soft Caps And Efficient Builds

Before respeccing, it helps to understand soft caps.

Soft caps are points where leveling a stat becomes less efficient.

For example:

  • Damage gains may slow down
  • HP increases become smaller
  • Stamina scaling weakens

This matters because dumping points endlessly into one stat is often less effective than balancing your build properly.

Understanding soft caps becomes especially important during late-game optimization and DLC preparation.

Step-by-Step

  1. Reach Liurnia of the Lakes
  2. Enter the Academy of Raya Lucaria
  3. Defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon
  4. Return to the Grand Library
  5. Speak with Rennala
  6. Select Rebirth
  7. Spend one Larval Tear
  8. Reassign your attribute points

Best Strategy

Use your first respec to correct inefficient early-game stat distribution rather than chasing every new weapon immediately.

If you are unsure what build you want long-term, save a few Larval Tears for later experimentation once you discover stronger weapons, spells, or late-game gear.

Warnings

  • You cannot respec without a Larval Tear.
  • Larval Tears are limited per playthrough.
  • Your stats cannot go below your starting class values.
  • Accidentally creating an unbalanced build can leave you temporarily weaker if you are not careful.

Rewards

  • Full stat redistribution
  • Complete build flexibility
  • Access to new weapon and spell builds
  • Easier late-game optimization

Tips

  • Keep at least one spare Larval Tear for late-game experimentation.
  • Respeccing is extremely useful before entering difficult DLC content or New Game Plus.
  • Intelligence and Faith builds often benefit the most from respeccing because of changing spell requirements.
  • If your build suddenly feels terrible after a respec, congratulations, you discovered the true final boss: math.
