Full Guide

How To Start The Pirate King’s Treasure Quest

The Pirate King’s Treasure activity becomes available at the start of Chapter 12 after the Tiny Bronco transforms into a watercraft.

Travel to the dock where the Tiny Bronco is parked near Costa del Sol and open the treasure chest marked with glowing purple crossed swords. This gives you the Pirate’s Treasure Map, revealing the locations of four hidden Pirate Grottos scattered across the Meridian Ocean.

How The Pirate Grotto Hunt Works

Each grotto contains:

  • a powerful boss encounter
  • a hidden treasure chest
  • one Pirate Relic

You can tackle the grottos in any order, but some are easier depending on your current progression and party setup.

While sailing:

  • Press left on the D-Pad to open the treasure map
  • Hold L1 to zoom in
  • Dock at nearby red buoys to access grotto islands

After defeating the boss at each location, loot the nearby chest to claim the relic.

Pirate Grotto Alpha Location – Ogre Raider

Grotto Alpha is located south of Gongaga Port along the coastline.

Boss:
Ogre Raider

Weakness:
Ice

The Ogre Raider is one of the easier fights in the chain. Pressure it quickly using ice attacks before its roar buffs become dangerous.

Pirate Grotto Beta Location – Brineborn Demon

Grotto Beta is located south of the Junon region near Crow’s Nest.

Boss:
Brineborn Demon

Weakness:
Fire

This boss becomes dangerous if allowed to cast Graviga. Use fire-based attacks aggressively to stagger it before the cast completes.

Pirate Grotto Gamma Location – Hueyacoatl

Grotto Gamma is northeast of Costa del Sol near a narrow ocean inlet.

Boss:
Hueyacoatl

Weakness:
Wind

The boss enters a Supercharged state where lightning strikes constantly hit the arena. Attacking it during this phase pressures it quickly despite the chaos.

Pirate Grotto Delta Location – Sea Dragon

Grotto Delta is northeast of Grotto Gamma on a nearby island.

Boss:
Sea Dragon

Weaknesses:
Poison and Lightning

Apply poison first using Bio, then follow up with lightning spells to stagger it efficiently. Be careful during Galvanizing Flames, since the boss counters most direct attacks during this phase.

How To Craft The Corsair’s Compass

Once all four Pirate Relics are collected:

  1. Open the pause menu
  2. Enter the Item Transmuter
  3. Navigate to the Accessories tab
  4. Craft the Corsair’s Compass

The blueprint automatically appears after obtaining every relic.

How The Corsair’s Compass Works

With the Corsair’s Compass equipped, a golden directional reticle appears while exploring the Meridian Ocean aboard the Tiny Bronco.

The compass points toward hidden floating purple crates containing:

  • Pirate Jetsam
  • rare crafting materials
  • transmutation resources

Simply follow the directional arrow until you locate the crate floating in the water nearby.

Where To Find Pirate Jetsam

Pirate Jetsam only appears throughout the Meridian Ocean.

There are:

  • 24 total crates
  • 19 available during Chapter 12
  • 5 additional crates unlocked in northern waters during Chapter 13

Exploring thoroughly across the ocean is important if you want enough materials for late-game crafting.

What Pirate Jetsam Is Used For

Pirate Jetsam is primarily used for crafting powerful late-game accessories.

Items include:

  • Genji Ring
  • Genji Gloves
  • Genji Earrings
  • Enhanced Karmic Cowl
  • Enhanced Expeditionary Medal
  • Enhanced Malboro Orb

If you plan on tackling Hard Mode or endgame combat challenges, collecting Jetsam becomes extremely valuable.

Why The Corsair’s Compass Is Worth Getting

The ocean exploration system in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth hides some surprisingly useful rewards behind the Corsair’s Compass. Without it, finding every Jetsam crate becomes extremely tedious.

Thankfully, once the compass starts pinging nearby loot, sailing around the ocean turns into a giant treasure hunt. Honestly, it’s one of the better optional exploration systems in the game once Chadley stops talking for five seconds.
